Introduction:
Balinese art has captured a unique position deep within our hearts and minds. Its captivating images reveal people living close to nature and the divine, expressed in a diverse and colourful array of visual languages. Balinese paintings are depictions of daily life and narratives based on concepts derived from the sacred Balinese Hindu Buddhist philosophies. Balinese paintings and woodcarvings have attained global recognition and may be found in homes in many countries throughout the world.
The Balinese Classical painting style became the foundation of ‘schools’ of painting that evolved during the 20th century. The Classical story-telling paintings, that date back to the 13th – 16th century East Javanese Majapahit Empire, have transformed from being Indian to being Javanese, before becoming Balinese, while absorbing other influences from China and Persia along the way. Bali and Indonesian art insider Richard Horstman clarifies the complexities of the painting traditions, explains their techniques, influences and the development of Balinese art while introducing you to some of the most relevant artists in Ubud.

Museum Puri Lukisan (2 hours)
An Introduction to Balinese Art and the historical development of Balinese painting, with explanations of:
– Balinese Classical painting (also referred to as Wayang and Kamasan)
– The Ubud School of Painting (and the influence of foreign artists on the local style referred to as the Ubud style of School)
– The Batuan School of Painting
– Gusti Nyoman Lempad
– Masters of the Ubud School of Painting (Sobrat, Poleng, Kobot)
– Celebrated artists from other schools of Balinese painting within the Puri Lukisan collection.
Artists Studios
Made Djirna (b.1957, Kedewatan, Ubud) is one of the most celebrated Balinese contemporary artists and has frequently exhibited nationally and internationally, while his works are in private and public collections around the world. Visiting Djirna’s studio is like stepping into another world where the invisible forces come into play. It is an unforgettable experience.
Ketut Budiana was born in 1950 into a family of master artisans in the village of Padang Tegal, Ubud. He is highly skilled sculptor, architect, and specializes in making scared temple images, ceremonial masks and sarcophagus for ritual cremations. He has taken Balinese painting on its own distinct path, creating visual formulations of the complexity of the Balinese Hindu philosophy and cosmology – with themes deeply rooted in religious, mythological, esoteric teachings contained in the sacred lontars (hand inscribed books made in specially treated palm leaf).
Nyoman ‘Kenyem’ Sujana has created a distinct signature style of painting; beautiful and vibrant interpretations of aspects of life that are close to his heart and the environment he lives in. Educated at the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Denpasar, and born in 1972 in Sayan, Ubud, Kenyem’s paintings are contemporary, while at the same time remaining distinctly Balinese.
Richard Horstman is an ex-pat Australian writer and consultant living in Ubud who for the past 13 years he has been attending events throughout SE Asia and writing about art and culture in Bali and Indonesia. He works with artists, collectives, galleries, auction houses and museums and is the Art Columnist for NOW!Bali and UbudLife magazines, contributor to the Jakarta Post and founder of LifeAsArtAsia. Among his clients are Larasati Auctioneers, Gallery 101 and artist Jean-Philippe Haure.
He is an advisor to Ubud Diary, a new gallery specializing in the Ubud School of Painting in Lodtunduh, Ubud, and recently launched his book on Balinese Art, Ubud Diary: Celebrating the Ubud School of Painting: the Diversity of the Visual Language published in November 2019 by Ubud Diary.
